These tasty crustaceans have even served as the backbone for many important community events. Each year we celebrate National Shrimp Day on May 10th. Numerous shrimp festivals are held annually, including the National Shrimp Festival in Alabama. Featured in early October, this festival is the largest shrimp celebration in our nation and attracts over 250,000 visitors. The Ft. Myers Beach Shrimp Festival is another popular celebration, and features the crowning of the Shrimp Festival Queen every year.

Perhaps this year judges will include shrimp-inspired beauty products as a prize for the Queen! From your lips down to your toes, shrimp’s bright pink color has left its mark in the beauty world. OPI features “Cajun Shrimp” as a bright coral-like color in their polish line. Makeup by Sparkle offers a fresh, light pink shrimp-colored lipstick. With its plethora of health benefits and newly inspired cosmetic creations shrimp now help you look and feel wonderful both inside and out!

Along with maintaining your looks, shrimp may also help save a life. Although only a shrimp in name, the mantis shrimp is now serving as an inspiration for a light-weight, efficient new body armor. Researchers at the University of California Riverside have teamed up with scientists from Purdue University and Singapore’s Nanyang Technology University to study the fascinating properties of the mantis shrimp’s tough “club.” The club is renowned for its impenetrability, and its ability to withstand numerous high-velocity strikes. The mantis shrimp’s unique claw-like appendage bears the strain of the equivalent of 50,000 bullet impacts over their lifetime. Researchers hope to utilize knowledge of the club’s design and material composition to create body armor and even vehicle frames that are stronger, more protective, and lighter-weight than products currently available.

Shrimp-inspired outerwear branches from functionality into high fashion as well. From silly pet accessories to formal evening wear, shrimp have inspired hats, shirts, dresses, and shoes!

Shrimp has even found its way into the literary world. Florida author Tim Dorsey recently published the latest addition to his crime-comedy series, Tiger Shrimp Tango. This hilarious new book follows the antics of Serge Storms, a well-meaning serial killer ridding the world of evil-doers while maintaining a delightful obsession with all things related to the Sunshine State.

Shrimp has also played a notable role in pop culture including movies (who can forget Bubba’s memorable shrimp-centric monologue in Forest Gump) and ocean-inspired art. With their scrumptious flavors, dynamic physical properties, and beautiful coral-esque color, shrimp will continue to offer inspiration to innovators around the world. Happy Healthy Shrimp is proud to reflect the inspiration offered by our namesake through advancing technology and practices in naturally grown, sustainable seafood production.
